Support from teachers for our 2024 education manifesto
No one speaks up for the disadvantaged in our education system like Class Divide, and their manifesto for the UK general election 2024 sets forward a programme that most educators would endorse. Their plan includes simple actions that could transform the lives of those affected.
The Teacher Network fully supports Class Divide’s demands for free school buses/ public transport and to give disadvantaged pupils the freedom to choose the best school, regardless of postcodes. A fair society starts with a fully diversified school system.
At a time when pressures on school budgets are increasing, we also echo Class Divide’s call to ensure Pupil Premium funding is used in a way that directly benefits and supports the pupils it is intended for.
Providing role models is an important part of building aspiration for the future and, as with other public services like the police, a workforce that reflects the range of the community they serve would build bridges between educators and pupils, fostering mutual understanding and increased respect.
We must build an education system that gives everyone a fair chance to be successful. What we learn in school should reflect not only what society needs, but also what the individual can offer, with room for all learners and with support to level up any inherited differences.
